Expired Pill

Is it okay to take pills past the expiration date? I wonder...

I've been taking Executive B every single day since..well I can't remember! I'm not someone who likes to take pills but this one is an exception. Well of course it's because my mom successfully persuaded me or maybe convinced me to take the pills everyday. In fact, she bought it for me as she said it's good to meet my busy daily requirements. Whatever.

And I also have this habit not to constantly check expiration date. You have to constantly check it because at this occasion, I kinda regret for not doing so. Dang.

Usually I wake up late so I kinda grab whatever I need and quickly swallow one pill for each day(except weekend) until today.

Today I kinda feel like looking all over the bottle and I did till I saw EXP DATE: OCT 2010. Gosh, it was like the image has been magnified.

Honestly, I'm quite scared considering I've been taking it for few months after the expiration date. I even googled is it safe or not to take the expired pills?

The answer is NO. But maybe on some rare cases, it is acceptable, no harm trying. And yeah I'm still breathing BTW. Hahaha. (-_^)

Why NO? First of all, the pills are already expired. There is a reason why the company put the manufacturing and expiration date. They actually tell us how long the drugs can be expected to be effective. After the expiration date, it does not mean that the drugs will become poisonous or something, but the effectiveness is no longer guaranteed.

And of course after the expiration date, the drug starts to deteriorate and possibly forming into another kind of chemical form that will harm our body. We will never know, do we?

It is just a safe precaution not to take expired pills. Besides, who would suggest you to take expired pills? Haha. I'm just saying that all of us need to be more aware of whatever we take. Don't just take it blindly. *cough cough* Don't be like me..=(

You have to check the expiration date and such. =)

Extend or shorten your life?

Sunday, July 12, 2009

I have read in a magazine about choices of how long we live. I’m actually interested with the facts. It is somehow true that everything we do in our life affects our lifespan. However I do believe that we’ll never know how long we’ll live this life because death is something unexpected. We have to be ready all the time because who knows we could be dead by tomorrow. Having a disease is also not a sign for us to give up living this life because we never know; sometimes those with severe illness might live longer than those who are very healthy. Still I just want to share these facts that I’ve read:

You’ll live 5 years longer if you:
• Eat Chocolate
• Become vegetarian

You’ll live 15 years longer if you:
• Control your cholesterol
• Eat fewer calories
• Build muscle

You’ll live 10 years longer if you:
• Eat a banana a day
• Take up dancing
• Looks after your looks

You’ll live 3 years longer if you:
• Wash your hands
• Aim to excel
• Drink tea
• Play cards

You could shorten your life by a year if you:
• Are 10 pounds overweight
• Don’t have a pet
• Hang out with smokers
• Neglect your dental hygiene

You could shorten your life by 3 years if you:
• Stay single
• Have negative name
• Skip breakfast

You could shorten your life by 5 years if you:
• Love to sleep
• Are a smoker

You could shorten your life by 10 years if you:
• Are negative
• Are a loner
• Never get health checks
• Drink too much

I can totally munch chocolate everyday because I love chocolate and chocolate has high antioxidants too. Honestly I don’t think I could ever become a vegetarian as I love meats, chickens, and seafood so much. Sometimes I even think vegetarian missed a lot of wonderful things in this life for not eating chickens and seafood. Still it’s their own choices after all, so I do respect them. I do want to live longer but I don’t think I could build muscle or take up dancing. Haha. I also don’t like to eat banana so perhaps I’ll opt for another fruits. Too bad for me because I've already shorten my life since I don’t have a pet. I wanted to have one but I don’t think it’s a good idea at all. My parents don’t like the idea of having animals around in our house. Besides I have asthma so I’m a bit allergic to fur. I’m not a smoker and never will be but I do hang around with people who are smokers. As a matter of fact, my dad is a smoker and almost all of my guy friends are smokers too. Maybe I can skip that part. Haha. Oh I love to sleep when I don’t have anything to do. Sounds bad for a woman but I love it. Huhu. I’m thinking to get rid of this bad habit and now I’ve found a good reason to stimulate myself. =]

Why breakfast is so important?

Wednesday, July 8, 2009

During my school days I would say I have never skipped breakfast but now I’m at the university, I tend to skip breakfast easily. I usually wake up late and I’m rushing to get ready for my classes thus I don’t have time to eat breakfast. I guess it’s one of the reasons why I’m always sleepy during lectures not to mention I easily lose my concentration too. Hahaa…Even when I’m home during my holiday I don’t take breakfast. I’m just too lazy to go downstairs and I’ll eat more during lunchtime. I know it’s important for us to take breakfast but I don’t really care much about that since I don’t really know how important that is important. However I read an article about the importance of breakfast and suddenly I think I’m going to take a breakfast everyday from now onwards. Ohh it’s a total lie. But I will try to make it a habit. Yeah..I will..I definitely will..Well I think if you’re not working or studying at the moment it is considerably fine for skipping your breakfast. But if you’re working and studying there’s no greater truth than breakfast being the most important meal of the day, it’s for everyone actually. Haha..

Okay..Here’s what the article says:

People who eat breakfast are more likely to have better concentration, problem-solving skills and eye hand coordination. Besides it provides you with energy you need to warm up and get your energies running and your mind functioning well for the entire day. In other word, it actually activates your brain. Skipping the morning meal means depriving your body of calcium. Calcium is essential for your body! It is a nutrient that keeps your blood pressure low, prevents colon cancer, eases the symptoms of PMS, fortifies your bone density and etc. Breakfast is very important for both physical and mental health. People who eat breakfast are more likely to:

• Have better concentration and be more productive throughout the morning ~ due to replenishing glucose, the brain’s main energy source.

• Control weight ~ there are several theories behind the association between eating breakfast and controlling weight. Researchers speculate that eating breakfast may reduce hunger later in the day, or that it may cause eaters to choose less-dense foods at later meals. Eating breakfast regularly may simply be an indicator of someone who adopts a low-calorie, low-fat diet.

• Have more strength and endurance ~ You’ll have higher energy levels and you’re much stronger to engage yourself in physical activity.

• Have lower cholesterol, which reduces the risk of heart disease ~ Research has shown that people who eat breakfast consume less dietary cholesterol than people who don't eat breakfast.

If weight is your concern (you’re on diet), I think it’s better for you not to skip your breakfast but you can skip your lunch. When you’re already eat breakfast (a healthy one!) you’ll not feel as hungry as when you’re not taking your breakfast. Therefore you can totally skip your lunch or grab less food for your lunch. As for working people and students no matter how late or how lazy you are, be sure to at least drink a hot beverage with high calcium milk in it like coffee for an example. If you still don’t want to eat or drink anything in the early morning (There are few people I know who will feel nauseous and soon vomit just because they’re trying to have breakfast), try taking supplements instead. Okay breakfast skipper, let’s try our best to start taking breakfast. =]

Contact Lens

Wednesday, July 1, 2009

I would like to share about contact lens. Well I’ve been wearing contact lens since I was 15. I’m certainly sure for now after 7 years of experiences how to care for my lens. I even had eyes infection when I was 18. I lived in my matriculation college in Perak and my lens solution is running empty and I need to wait till weekend to buy a new one or to ask my parents to come over to replace it. So I have no choice but to save my solution so I do not really rinse my lens before I put it on. I thought it was safe to do so since I washed my hands but it was a very bad thought. I had to go to the doctor because I had eyes infection. To make it even worse, I had to take 2 weeks off from my classes. Luckily I rest at my house but it is still a torture considering I can’t go out from my room. My siblings would curse me because they do not want to get the infection too. My eyes were like super red back then but I knew it is not contagious since my doctor says so. Whatever. Speaking about lenses back, I’ve tried many ranges of contact lenses from Acuvue, Ultraflex, Bausch & Lomb, Ciba Vision O2, Freshkon and the list goes on. As for me, I think the best lenses are those from Ciba Vision O2 and Freshkon lens. They have a high number of water content which will make your eyes feel the moisture and remains the moist. I first started to wear lens because I had trouble with my spectacles. I do not really like wearing spectacles because it felt like there is something hanging over my nose and it’s absolutely bothering me. I took another option which is to wear contact lens. At first, I felt quite weird having something in my eyes and it will not fit my eyes perfectly. I mean it took a couple of days for my eyes to adjust and it is the norm of wearing contact lens. I wear contact lens on a daily basis and I only wear corrective contact lens with no color. I do wear colored contact lens but only to certain occasion. It would be awkward if I wear colored contact lens on a daily basis. Haahah..
If you want to wear contact lens you should ask your doctor first. Sometimes there are few people who cannot wear lens since they have certain types of allergic conditions. When your doctor says it is okay for you to start wearing lens then you should opt for good lens. Then you should know how to properly put in contact lens and take it out from your eyes. You must put in your lens in front of a mirror but you don’t need to do so when you’re taking it out.
Here are some of my tips:

1) Be sure to take out your lens when you’re done with your school, work or whatever you’re doing to give your eyes a rest. (when wearing contact lens your eyes is tired)
2) Always wash your hands before you touch your lens. Cleanliness is very important when handling with lens.
3) Always bring your lens case and solution to anywhere you go. Sometimes you’ll feel something weird with your eyes because of dust, sunlight or etc. You do not want to throw away your lens just like that. Haha
4) Do not try to nap with your contact lens if you think you’re not comfortable enough to do so. You may do so if you’ve been wearing lens for a while but try to avoid it.
5) Avoid wearing the lens more than 8 hours a day. It will cause your eyes to appear red.
6) Never reuse the solution. By doing so, you are at risk of getting infection.
7) Always thoroughly rinse each side of your lens with your solution. It is to make sure your lens is clean before you put it in your eyes.
8) Soak your lens in a clean case and always change your case every 1-2 months or when you think it is dirty.
9) Do not put rinse your lens and case with tap water or just any solution. It may cause infection or sight damage.
10) Contact lens should not be worn more than the recommended wearing period (1 week or 1 month). It may vary according to which lens you buy.
11) Don't let the tip of solution bottles touch other surfaces, including your fingers, eyes or contact lenses. The solution can become contaminated.

Some people say it is okay to sleep with lens but I don’t do such. But it has occurred to me quite a few times. I accidentally took a nap with my lens and when I woke up my eyes were extremely dry. Therefore it is always not safe to sleep with your lens. I have read about it and it says it can cause a cornea ulcer causing pain and aversion to light. If you ever sleep with your lens better stop doing so. You might not want to lose your sight because of your carelessness. I was once caught sleep with my lens in and the next thing I knew when I woke up, one of my lens wasn’t in my eye. It slide to somewhere under my upper eyelid. I could not reach it and I started to cry because my mom scared me and scolded me (My parents do not really like the idea of me wearing lens). Then it suddenly slipped out from my eye because I cried too much. I guess the lens felled with my tears. Thank goodness I do not have to undergo the eye operation and after that I have always be extra careful not to sleep with my lens again. Please note that there are few lenses in stores like Ciba Vision O2 where you can sleep in them. If it does not say so, better not to sleep with them.

Lessons of the story: Do not sleep with your lens no matter how tired you are and always rinse your lens before you put it in. =]

smoking is never good

Sunday, August 24, 2008

Smoking is common these days and in fact, some people (narrow-minded people) think that any person who is not a smoker is outdated, not fun at all and etc. This is true since I have some girl friends that are among these kinds of people. As for me, they are the ones who are not fun at all because they are shortening their life with smoking habits. Get the facts okay.. Smoking is not good. It has never been good. But I know once u have tried, its hard for you to quit as it is addictive. Try not to start is the safest way to do. If you’re a smoker and want to quit, you can try to motivate yourself first like you can save the money you’d spend on cigar. Let’s say your cigar is RM7.50 per pack and a pack per week comes to RM360 per year. It’s a lot that you can even use that money to splurge on a hot new outfit or maybe a diamante watch. For people who haven’t try it just yet, better not to even think of it and bear these facts in your mind.

It can cause weight gain: a study found that college smokers weigh more than nonsmokers. Smoke damages the tiny air sacs in the lungs- so a smoker gets out of breath more quickly, which makes it harder to exercise.

It can hurt your grades : Smoker’s brain have adapted to functioning with nicotine – so when a smoker gets a craving and can’t smoke, yeah like when she’s in the class or in the middle of examination, her brain doesn’t work as well, and her memory suffers.

It’s depressing: Teens who light up are four times more likely to become depressed than those who don’t. Scientists say smoking may lower serotonin (you “feel good” chemical).

It worsens acne: Nicotine ups stress hormones, which speed oil production – clogging pores and causing more breakouts.
